Common Types of Rodents in Florida

Rodents are a frequent problem for homes and businesses across Florida. Warm weather, easy access to food, and plenty of shelter make attics, crawl spaces, and garages ideal nesting spots. The most common rodents you’ll run into include:

Roof Rat
(Rattus rattus) The most common rat in Florida. Excellent climbers that nest in attics, soffits, and rooflines. They contaminate insulation and chew through wires and plumbing lines.
Norway Rat
(Rattus norvegicus) Larger and more aggressive. Usually burrow outdoors or enter buildings at ground level.
House Mouse
(Mus musculus) Small, fast breeders that squeeze through tiny gaps. Common in kitchens, garages, and storage areas.
Not-So-Fun Fact: Roof rats are especially problematic in Florida because they quickly reproduce 5 to 8 pups per litter, up to 6 litters a year.
